After the superb results during the qualifications, there were high hopes for exciting games during the single elimination stages as of Friday morning. Each archer has 12 arrows and can score 120 pts per match. The number 1 ranked in qualifications shoots against the number 64 in elimination, winner goes on !
The recurve category took the field in the morning, the compound meet in the afternoon. The gold and bronze medal match will be shooting on Sunday morning at the Magico Gonzalez Stadium. A crowd of 5’000 fans is expected and the archers were eager to qualify for such an event !
Compound Men
At the first round of Eliminations, some surprises showed up, such as Mexican Ruben Ochoa beating Antalya World Cup Winner, Roberval Do Santos, 114 to 115. Another one is early departure of Martin Damsbo (DEN) who was kicked out by veteran Canadian Kopecky 109 to 112. Venezuelan Gary Hernandez also beat Fred Van Zutphen (NED) 115 to 116.
The competition format with 12 arrows matches is tough and one archer must be directly in the pace. A bad start is costly and can cause a premature elimination.
In the next round, 1/8 Elimination, surprising Hernandez (VEN) again beat Grimmwood (GBR), while Salvadorian Lara beat Canadian Kopecky. Patrizio Hofer from Switzerland, leader of the World Cup ranking until today, was taken out by Logan Wilde (USA), while Ruben Ochoa continued in the same vein to beat Dave Cousins (USA). Reo Wilde (USA) suffered to get through, shooting two extra-arrows versus Sergio Pagni (ITA).
In the ¼ Final Reo Wilde met with Venezuelan Hernandez and got the last word. Jimenez (ESA) shot a tight match against his teammate Lara (ESA) that he won on the last arrows. Logan Wilde shot against Antalya World Cup 2nd place Peter Elzinga (NED) prevailed one more time 114-112 pts. Emiel Custers (NED) paid for an error of target with one arrow (shot as 10) and lost his match against Ruben Ochoa (MEX)
Jorge Jimenez (ESA) said “I am very happy to have come up to here, but it is the same position I came up to in Antalya two weeks ago. This time I will try to surpass it, and being in my own country, I will give it all to achieve it.”
The semi-finals will be shot on Saturday at 13h30 in San Salvador.
Compound Women
Until the 1/8 of Final Matches all favorite archers did their way, even if the 4th ranked US American Jahna Davis had to fight until the last two arrows to beat Dominican Teresa Rodriguez. In that round the first tied score was shot. Brazilian archer Dirma Dos Santos and Venezuelan Luzmary Guedez tied at 110: the first shoot-off arrow was a 10 for both, but on the second arrow Guedez made a 10 which gave her the chance to shoot against Jahna Davis (USA) in the quarter. The surprise of the day was nevertheless the defeat of World Cup leader Anna Kazantseva-Bologova (RUS) who failed to win versus a though contender in Christie Colin (USA) who beat her 111-110. Other favorites, as for example new World Record Holder Sofia Goncharova (RUS), Jamie Van Natta (USA) and Almendra Ochoa (MEX) showed their strength and passed to the quarter final.
Before the storm, the 4 top-ranked archers in the qualifying prevailed and moved into the ½ Final Matches, where Sofia Goncharova will meet Jahna Davis and Almendra Ochoa will try to beat the Jamie Van Natta.
Recurve Men
In the morning elimination session, Frangilli (ITA) defeated Cuban Stevens by 2 pts (107-105) in the 1/8 Elimination match. Frangilli then met Mexican Magana who previously defeated the Chinese Wu (112-108). The match between Frangilli and Magana was the most exciting one of the morning in the Recurve Men division, as they were tied after each single end, going up to 107-107. The Mexican wouldn’t let it go against the legendary Frangilli, and finally got the last word after the shoot-off. Frangilli only shot a 9, while Magana shot a perfect X (10 points).
Eduardo, how do you feel now that you beat famous Frangilli, after beating Chinese Wu ?
I feel very happy, I wish the next match play will be like this one. We will see !
In the ¼ Final Magana met with the strong archer Van Alten from Netherlands. Van Alten was leading the match after the 1st end by 1 pt and continued in the same vein until the last arrow of the last end winning 112 to 111.
Wietse, what does it feel to be in the Gold Medal Match ?
After the first two World Cups, it is good to be in the Final and have one more chance to be in Mexico. I’m back in saddle again ! And will definitely go to Shanghai to ensure my place in the Big Final.
We can also mention some early exits such as both Chinese Xue and Liu, kicked out respectively by surprising Venezuelan Diaz and Salvadorian Merlos C.
Both Canadians Duenas and Arcand made the surprise by taking out British Terry and US Wunderle in the 1/16 Elimination Round.
Di Buo was really strong all morning and is already assured to be at the top of the World Cup ranking when the competition in San Salvador is over. He defeated Bulgarian Hristov in the 1/8 Elimination, and then met with Venezuelan Diaz at the ¼ Final, winning 113-111. He then prevailed in a breath cutting match in semi-final versus Custers. He won in over-time 10-9.

Recurve Women
The recurve women category showed a confirmation, Qian Jialing (CHN) and a resurrection, Williamson (GBR). The British has been impressive all morning long, shooting 108, 106, 107 and 112 in the semi. She defeated two Chinese. In her quarter-final she was tied with Yu Hui (CHN) at 79 after 9 arrows and pulled out a one point victory in the last end (107-106). In her semi-final, she was tied at 55 with Zhang Juan Juan (CHN) after 6 arrows, had a slight edge after 9 arrows (82-80), and finished perfectly with 30 points to win the match 112 -105.
Allison, you seem to shoot terrific today. Do you feel you have improved since Antalya ?
I am glad I went through today, but I wasn’t shooting bad in Antalya or Porec. I scored high and just was beaten by one point there. Today was a good morning of archery. I am looking forward to shoot in the football stadium on Sunday.
Young hopeful Tonetta (ITA) started also well the competition scoring a 112 pts against Burgess (GBR). However the Italian could not quiet finish the job versus Zhang (CHN), losing 107 to 110 pts.
Elena, satisfied or disapointed ?
A bit disapointed ! I shot badly my last three arrows. Too bad. It is a good field here, although a little hot. This will put me in 5th position here in San Salvador. I was 5th in Porec and 9th in Antalya. If I still have a chance to reach the Grand Final in Mexico, I hope to go to the 4th event in Shanghai
Qian Jialing (CHN), winner at the Antalya World Cup recently, shot very well, too : 109, 108, 109 and 105. However, she had a tough 1/8 of final. With a tied score at 108 pts after 12 arrows, she had to go to the extra arrow in the sudden-death shoot off. She only scored an 8 but her opponent, Garcia (MEX), could not do better than 7. Qian had an easy semi-final after Satir (TUR) scored a 0 because of problem with the clicker at the release.
Among the early exits, we must mention Galinovskaya (RUS) and Frigeri (ITA) at the 2nd round and Guo Dan (CHN) and Brito (VEN) at the 3rd.
World Cup Ranking Analysis
Compound Men:
Reo Wilde will take the lead in the World Cup whatever happens in the semi and final. For the 2nd place it is still open depending on the outcome of the semi and finals but the contenders will be Jorge Jimenez from El Salvador and Ruben Ochoa from Mexico. Peter Elzingha will also have a chance to remain 2nd depending on the results of the former two. Patrizio Hofer and Emiel Custers will move down in the ranking but will remain in contention for the final places in Mexico.
Compound Women:
Kazantseva, although disappointing in El Salvador, has obtained enough points to be mathematically sure to be in the final. Depending on the outcome Jamie Van Natta and Gonchorova will respectively move up to 2nd and 3rd place with a strong option for the final. Jahna Davis will probably claim the 4th place.
Recurve Men
The two Italians Di Buo and Frangilli move in the top 4 with Petersson and Talukdar.
Recurve Women:
Qian Jialing will for sure be shooting the Grand Final. Elena Tonetta is putting herself in 2nd place and Satir and Galinovskaya remain in the top 4 but the competition is still wide open.
