Gellenthien and Hayakawa confirm they have to be reckoned with
Antalya - 29 May 2007
The afternoon in Antalya featured the second half of the day for Compound Men and Recurve Women, both categories shooting at 50 and 30 metres. This has finished the qualifications for them and decided the individual and team brackets.
Here are the results after the qualifying four distances:
Nami Hayakawa (JPN)
Recurve Women
The great satisfaction of the day has come from the recent Indoor World Champion, the Japanese Nami Hayakawa, who has stood up to the Korean Greats Choi Eun Young, Park Sung Hyun, Lee Sung Jin and Lee Tuk Young. After the four distances Hayakawa stands third with 1363 points just behind Choi (1374) and Park (1368) and just before the two Lees. The Asian ladies have left only pieces to the other continents in the Recurve Women category. The first two Europeans are Natalia Valeeva of Italy and Berengere Schuh of France who are placed sixth and seventh respectively.
In the Recurve Women team event, Korea, once again, looks untouchable! The team finished the qualifications with a 128-point advantage over China (4088-3960) who is ranked second. Third is Italy with 3941 points and fourth is Poland with 3930.
Braden Gellenthien (USA)
Compound Men
Braden Gellenthien (USA) has taken advantage of the two short distances to take the lead of the qualifications. With the best score at 50 metres (352) and the second best (360) at 30 metres Gellenthien is one small point in front of second seed Martin Damsbo (DEN) with a total of 1399. Third stands Great Britain's Chris White (1394) and fourth is French Dominique Genet (1388).
Jorge Jimenez (ESA), who drew the World Record at 90m in the morning with 347 points, but then suffered a miss in the first end at 70 meters when his bowstring broke, has succeeded in keeping a rank that allows him to keep hope for a possible new World Cup victory. He stands sixth at the end of the qualifications.
The team event in Compound Men features the Dutch archers at first rank with 4130 points, closely followed by Great Britain (4127) and France (4115). Germany and Denmark, respectively fourth and fifth, are already far behind with 4101 and 4097 but will still have a say in this competition, since it will be continued with head-to-head matches.
We look forward to seeing all archery fans online again tomorrow 30 May for the Recurve Men and the Compound Women qualification rounds!
