31 May 2007 - Im Ji Wan and Kim Yeon Chul stay solid

Im Ji Wan and Kim Yeon Chul stay solid Antalya - 31 May 2007   The two youngest Koreans did not shake at all during the matches and will meet in the final Saturday in Recurve Men. In Compound Women, Davis (USA) finally reaches a final and will meet the experienced Kazantzeva (RUS). One thing is for sure: the World Cup ranking and the places in the Dubai Final are still completely open!   In the afternoon it was the Recurve Men’s and the Compound Women’s turn to take the field, but once again there were many surprises in the early rounds.   Kim Yeon Chul (KOR)    Recurve Men The young talents Aubert (FRA) and Nespoli (ITA) as well as the experienced Galiazzo, Di Buo (ITA), Petersson (SWE) and Lee Chang Hwan (KOR), all suffered an early exit in the first round. Ivashko (UKR) and recent winner in Varese Frangilli (ITA) as well as no. 3 seed Terry (GBR) went out in the second round. What a losing streak! As a result, six of the eight quarter-finalists were less than 25 years old!   Im Ji Wan (KOR) played the experienced and World Cup leader Tsyrempilov (RUS) and took him out in quarter-final by 111-108. Serrano (MEX) eliminated the favourites among all Koreans Im Dong Hyun on the score of 112-107. Kim Yeon Chul (KOR) also progressively made the difference versus Furukawa (JPN) for a final score of 114-110. The tightest match was between Kerai (IND) and Xue Hai Feng (CHN). Xue had a four point lead after the first end (29-25) and still led by two points after the third one (81-79). However, he could not sustain his opponent’s return and the match was tight at 106. Kerai and Xue had to go for a sudden death shoot-off where the best arrow wins! As they both achieved a 9 on their respective first arrow, they had to shoot a second one. Experience prevailed at the end: Xue with another 9 defeated his opponent who could only get a 7.   In the semi-final Kim then had an easy win over Serrano, as the Mexican suffered from bad start with a poor 24-point first end. Kim won this match 113-107. The second semi-final between Im and Xue was closer. The score went from 28-29 to 56-55 and then 85-83. However, Im did not let victory go in the final end scoring another 29 points to clinch the match by 114-107.      Anastasia Anastasio (ITA)Compound Women The biggest surprise came out in the 1/8 eliminations when no 1. seed Van Natta (USA) was eliminated by the unknown Heijnen (NED). The Dutch was on a roll after winning her second round match on the very last arrow of the shoot-off versus Hunt (GBR). Heijnen then gave Ulsan winner’s a hard time. Kazantseva (RUS) and Heijnen were tied halfway at with 54 points each, but the Dutch finally “ran out of gas” and let the Russian win 111-109.   The other quarter-finals were as exciting. The young Anastasio (ITA), recent Indoor Junior World Champion and Cadet Outdoor World Champion, made her way to the forefront! For her second World Cup participation, she defeated the very experienced Ericsson (SWE) 112-110. Anastasio took the lead in the first end of the match and never let it go. For her part, Willems (BEL) took on Goncharova (RUS) in a blockbuster match. The Belgian was losing 56-57 halfway, but prevailed at the end (115-111). The American archer Davis came back from a difficult beginning of the season to beat the 2007 surprise, the Iranian Shabani. This match was really close: 29-28, 57-58, 85-84 and finally 112-111 for Davis.   Davis went on to play Willems in the semi-final. After an early lead by Willems (29-27), Davis came back into the match (85-85). She then scored 29 with her last three arrows, one point more than Willems for a final score of 114-113. Anastasio played Kazantseva in the other semi-final. The young Italian seemed to have an open way to the final with a comfortable 4-point advantage after six arrows (57-53). She could not sustain the pressure, however, and scored only 24 points in the third end allowing Kazantseva to come recover (80-81). The Russian felt another possible final and did not miss the opportunity. She finished up with three 10s to win the match by 110-109. Anastasio said: “It’s only my second tournament at the elite level. I am happy but also disappointed that I missed the final. I don’t know what happened with that 24 point end. I am still young. I hope that my performances will allow me to go to the World Championships in Leipzig. I am also looking forward to the team event tomorrow, because we have a good Italian team”!   The teams will shoot tomorrow, while the individual bronze and gold medal matches will take place on Saturday. The Turkish television channel TRT will cover both days live!   Didier Miéville FITA Communication
