Ready to go in Beijing!
Beijing - 19 August 2007
All the archers competing in the “Good Luck Beijing” 2007 International Archery Tournament to be held in the newly purpose built Olympic Green Archery Field on 20 August, will be trying to gain the invaluable experience of shooting at the site of next years Olympic Games.
Baljinima TSYREMPILOV (RUS)
Recurve Men
The Koreans do not enjoy the same domination of the sport as their female counterparts but that is not to say they fade in comparison.
Gold medallist Italian Marco GALIAZZO will compete in Beijing in preparation to defend his Athens 2004 title in the men’s individual event. He will be up against team-mate Michele FRANGILLI who is no stranger to Olympic medals, picking up a bronze in Atlanta and silver in Sydney.
Three years on from Athens is Australia’s Tim CUDDIHY who produced a stunning performance in 2004 breaking the Olympic record for his final rounds score and eventually claiming the bronze medal. He is still just 20 years old, but up there with the best.
Another young man who produced in Athens is Korean IM Dong Hyun (21), knocked out in the quarters but came away with gold in the team event. With a 2006 Doha Asian Games gold medal and first place in the 44th Outdoor Target World Archery Championships under his belt since 2004, he will be aiming for Korea’s first individual men’s Olympic gold in 2008.
Second to IM in the 44th World Championships was Russia’s main hope and current world number one, Baljinima TSYREMPILOV. Definitely one to watch, the Russian just won the Dover stage of the World Cup and will be meeting Juan Rene SERRANO of Mexico, FRANGILLI and Britain’s Alan WILLS in November’s final in Dubai, all of whom will be competing in Beijing.
Contending for men’s team hot spots will be Korea who is sending out a fresh new team from the gold medal winners of Athens, including KIM Yeon Chul who finished fifth in this year’s World Championships in Germany. Australia, Chinese Taipei, Italy and the quietly confident USA with highly experienced archer Victor WUNDERLE, will also be in the running. Great Britain is also likely to be a threat as the team including WILLS, Simon TERRY and Larry GODFREY is now ranked 2nd in the world.
The 60 male archers will begin competition with the Qualification Round at 3.30pm on Monday 20 August, in which they will shoot 72 arrows each to determine the draw for the Elimination Rounds starting on Friday 24 August.
The team event will take place on Wednesday 22 August and the men’s individual finals will be held on Sunday 26 August beginning at 4pm.
Recurve Women
Korea has dominated women’s archery over the years and this year is following a similar trend.
PARK Sung Hyun is the only one of the three Korean’s who made up the gold medal team in the Athens Olympics to be competing in Beijing this week. PARK, one of the sports most outstanding performers made a remarkably impressive debut in Athens 2004, clinching gold in both the individual and team event. She has also had a string of triumphs since then including recent silver at the World Championships in Leipzig, Germany last month.
Nama HAYAKAWA originally from Korea but now competing for Japan will be looking to produce a similar performance as she did at the Indoor World Championships in Turkey this year, where she took gold.
Natalya ERDYNYEVA (RUS)
Obviously runs in the family for Russian male archer Baljinima TSYREMPILOV as his niece, Natalya ERDYNIYEVA will be there to challenge PARK after the new world ranking came out on 16 August placing the Russian at the top spot just above PARK.
The USA will be rooting for their biggest chance at a medal in the women’s competition with Jennifer NICHOLS who finished fourth in this year's World Championships.
Alison WILLIAMSON is a consistent performer for Great Britain at international level. She was the only non Korean to break the medal sweep in the Olympic individual women’s event beginning in Sydney 2000, by taking the bronze in Athens.
WILLIAMSON will be entering her fifth Olympic Games next year after finishing in the top 10 in the previous four. She will also be aiming high (or more preferably on target) in the team competition after claiming gold on home soil at the beginning of this month in Dover at the World Cup event.
Despite only finishing 10th in the last Olympics, ZHANG Juan Juan with her Chinese team mates including HE Ying, took the silver defeated by Korea in the final. ZHANG who was last years World Cup gold medallist will be carrying the hopes of the host nation. She is currently in great form after shooting the highest score ever recorded in Great Britain, and the second highest of the year in any FITA competition in Dover this month.
Narrowly missing out on the individual bronze to WILLIAMSON, but part of the bronze medal team for Chinese Taipei in Athens is YUAN Shu Chi. Coming up against some familiar faces she will also be hoping to produce her best in Beijing.
No surprise for the favourites in the team competition. Korea will be preparing to defend their unbeaten Olympic gold run beginning when the team event was introduced in 1988. PARK along with strong team mates CHOI Eun Young and LEE Tuk Young are the team to beat.
Their most realistic challengers are likely to be the Chinese ladies as well as Chinese Taipei, Ukraine, Russia, Poland and Great Britain who have dramatically upped their game recently, earning the team bronze at this years World Championships in Germany.
In addition, Italy cannot be ignored in the women’s team competition. Even missing key team-mate Natalia Valeeva, the Italian’s are still likely to give their opponents a hard time.
The event will begin with the 53 female archers Qualification Round at 12 noon on Monday 20 August. This will be followed by the women’s team competition on Tuesday 21 August.
The women’s individual Elimination Rounds will start on Thursday 23 August and the gold medal match will go ahead on Saturday 25 August.
