Archery in the Jewish Games 2009 in Israel?
Lausanne – 17 January 2008
Every four years the Jewish Games are held in Israel. In order to possibly include the sport of archery in the 2009 event, the Israeli Archery Federation has been trying to locate Jewish archers worldwide. These Games, also called Maccabiah, are an Olympic-style sporting competition. It is the largest organized sports program for Jewish teenagers in the world.
If you are a Jewish archer and would be interested in such an event, you are kindly requested to contact the specially designed email address archery.maccabiah@gmail.com. This survey is to give the Israeli Archery Federation a general picture of whether Jewish archers would like their sport to be included in the programme. This does not mean that it will happen for sure.
The Maccabi Movement began in 1895 when the first all-Jewish sports club was formed in Constantinople. The first World Maccabiah Games were held in Israel in 1932. The Continental Games were introduced in 1982 and are held each August in multiple sites throughout North America with athletes from all over the world including Israel, Australia and Europe.
