Interview with Paris GOICO DE LARA (DOM)
Santo Domingo, 2 April 2008
We met with the young local star Paris GOICO DE LARA to ask him a few questions. Paris is Cadet World Champion, title that he won in Merida (MEX) in 2006. A few months before the supreme title, he participated in the Central American Games in Colombia where he won a Gold Medal at 30m, beating Jorge Jimenez (ESA), with an almost perfect score of 359 pts. He will be fighting hard in his home country to win a medal.
What does it feel to shoot a World Cup Stage in your home country?
It is great, but I have a lot of pressure, it is not the stress of the competition, but more the role I have to play here. I really cannot afford a wrong step or being ridiculous. I have to be careful because people count on me, and that is the big weight on my shoulders, even more than the competition itself. I have to show I’ve grown up and I can do it.
What good results have you had since 2006? In the last World Championships in 2007 in Leipzig (GER) I finished 89, but in the Continental Qualifying Tournament in El Salvador last year, I finished 4th. I am shooting an average of 690-691 pts in 70m Round, which is quite good to me. I hope I will be shooting about the same here.
This year, I will be going to Guatemala where a World Ranking Event will be shot, I hope to earn points for the World Ranking List (ndrl currently ranked 52). I will pass on my title in Turkey for the Youth World Championships to the next Cadet World Champion, but I hope to take the Junior title now that I am not Cadet anymore. We’ll see what future has got in the closet for me!
What are your expectations here then? I really hope I will be in the top 20 of qualifications, and go as far as I can in the matches; with all the good preparation I have had I really count on it. Then on the Team side I just hope to beat the American continent opponents.
What are your expectations for future? Actually, I will enter in the university this summer, but I will have the possibility to study in the morning and have free afternoons to train. I will of course train a little less than before, but not so much. Anyways, I don’t need to go to the Archery Field everyday to train, I can also do it at home some days, so I don’t believe there will be many changes. And I always say you have to give more of yourself than your time.
Anything else you would like to tell the world? Just that I feel very well prepared, I am confident in myself and that I hope to see the Archery Community again here for the next three years! We’ll be more than happy to welcome them all again.
Thank you Paris, and good luck!
