The two World Cup Winners – out! Santo Domingo, 3 April 2007
Here is the LIVE report of Elimination Matches at the Meteksan World Cup 2008 Stage 1 in Santo Domingo. The Recurve Women and Compound Men, started at 10:30 am local time.
Recurve Women 1st round: Banerjee (IND) - Leoni (VEN) The 2007 World Cup Winner was upset in the first round! She started with a 3 and could never recover. Her first end was 3-7-8-7-6-9 for a total of only 40 points. Leoni had 8-7-6-6-10-10 for 47 points. The Venezuelan carried on winning 95-84.
1st round: Tonetta (ITA) – Tejada (DOM) The Dominican archer was leading at half-time 47-46 against no. 2 seed Tonetta! However, the wind went stronger in the second half and Tejada was badly affected by it. She scored a 1 and 2, lower left on the target. Meanwhile Tonetta was solid shooting 9-9-9-9-9-10 and clinched the match 101-73.
1st round: Cwienczek (POL) – Oktem (TUR) Oktem had the best start leading 47-45. However, she also suffered from the wind in the second end and scored a 2, lower left. Cwienczek won the match 94-90.
2nd round: Cwienczek (POL) – Hitzler (GER) The Polish archer could never get into the match. She scored 9-7-9-8-9-5 for 47 pts while Hitzler started really well with X10-X10-9-7-9-8 for 53 pts. She continued clinching the match 105-96.
2nd round: Williamson (GBR) – Schuh (FRA) Schuh had a great start with 10-X10-9-9-9-X10 for 57 pts. Williamson had only 9-7-7-10-9-10 for 52 pts. The rest of the match was more equal and the French won 107-101.
2nd round: Lionetti (ITA) – Wei (TPE) This match was close in the first end, Lionetti leading 52-51. However, Wei started the second very strong with X10-10-10 and continued with 9-9-8. That was too much for the 9-9-8-9-7-7 for Lionetti. Wei won 107-101.
2nd round: Tonetta (ITA) – Narimanidze (GEO) The Georgian led 52-48 after the first six arrows. Despite a strong finish (9-7-8-10-9-10), Tonetta could not come back. Bad day for the Italians who were superb yesterday. Narimanidze earned 9-8-8-10-9-9 and won the match 105-101.
2nd round: Lionetti (ITA) – Wei (TPE) This match was close in the first end, Lionetti leading 52-51. However, Wei started the second very strong with X10-10-10 and continued with 9-9-8. That was too much for the 9-9-8-9-7-7 for Lionetti. Wei won 107-101.
3rd round: Erdyniyeva (RUS) – Hitzler (GER) There are some strong but short storms on the field in Santo Domingo. In the 3rd round, the rain started pouring 84 seconds into the match. Therefore, the ones that could shoot quicker and/or had a lead with the first arrows had the better chance to win. Thanksfully for her Erdyniyeva had a good lead after the first end 56-48. She continued with 10-8-10, but she scored only 5-10-6 to finish the match. Enough to win 108-99.
3rd round: Valeeva (ITA) – Vrakking (CAN) Valeeva is famous for being the fastest shooter on the field. Surely an advantage to catch the break in a stormy weather. She started with 10-10-9-9-8-7 and led 52-47. She held on at the end with 8-7-8-9-9-7 to win the match 100-95.
Quarter-final: Roman (MEX) – Unruh (GER) Roman held the 7th seed quite well. She started with 10-9-7 and led Unruh 26-24. However, the Mexican had a 6 with her fourth arrow, while the German scored 9-X10-9 to take the lead 52-51. Roman came back in the third end shooting 9-10-10, compared to the 8-10-X10 of Unruh. The score was tied and stayed tied until the end of the match as the two archers both shot 8-8-8. Unruh shot first in the shoot-off and scored an X10, putting a lot of pressure. Too much for Roman who managed only a 6. Unruh goes to the semi-finals!
The results of quarter-finals are: Erdynyeva (RUS) vs. Folkard (GBR): 110-101 Schuh (FRA) vs. Wei (TPE): 108-101 Valeeva (ITA) vs. Wu (TPE): 109-86 Roman (MEX) vs. Unruh (GER): 104 T6 : 104 T10
As of the quarter-finals, the archers shoot 4*3 arrows. The quarter-finals were delayed a little because of heavy rains.
Semi-final: Erdyniyeva (RUS) – Schuh (FRA) The rain stopped but there was still some gusty wind. This influenced the first end of this match. Erdyniyeva shot 8-9-6 and Schuh had 9-X10-6. However, the Russian came back stronger in the second end. She shot 9-10-8 compared to Schuh’s 7-9-7. Erdyniyeva led 50-48, then 77-75 and although she lost a point on the 11th arrow, she clinched the match 103-102.
Semi-final: Valeeva (ITA) – Unruh (GER) Unruh had a nice run to this point but could not maintain it. She scored 8-10-8 and 9-6-9 while Valeeva had 9-10-9 and 10-9-9. The score at half-time was 56-50. The Italian held it until the end, 111-102.
Compound Men 1st round: Goico de Lara (DOM) - Bojcun (SVK) The young Dominican star started well with a 10-10-10-9-9-10 and led by two after the first end, 58-56. Despite a few 9s in the second end, Goico continued to win 113-111.
1st round: Elzinga (NED) - Mestres (DOM) Mestres from the Dominican Republic gave his best but it wasn't enough against one of the top archers in the world. Elzinga led 57-55 and continued with 10-10-9-10-10-10 to clinch the match 116-109.
2nd round: Brasseur (FRA) - Goico de Lara (DOM) The young Dominican tested one of the best in the world, but Brasseur did not give a chance. He scored a 59 and 60 to clinch the match 119-111. Goico de Lara could not manage enough 10s: 9-9-9-9-10-9 and 9-10-10-8-10-9
2nd round: Pagni (ITA) – Dos Santos (BRA) That match promised to be very close and it was indeed. Dos Santos led 56-55. They tied at 57 in the second end, so Dos Santos won 113-112.
2nd round: Timms (AUS) – Jimenez (ESA) The 2007 World Cup Winner in this category suffered defeat. Jimenez shot 58 points twice. Timms shot a perfect 60 in the first end and held a 57 in the second end. Timms won 117-116.
3rd round: Brasseur (FRA) – Coghlan (AUS) What a match! Coghlan started with 10-10-10-10-9-9 for 58 points and Brasseur did almost as well with 10-10-10-9-9-9 for 57 points. However, the French came back strongly in the second end with 9-10-10-10-9-10 (58 pts) and the Australian shot only 9-9-10-10-9-10 (57 pts). The match ended tied at 115 pts. The first arrow of the shoot-off was a 9 for both. Coghlan shot a final 10 point that Brasseur could not match (9). Coghlan moved on!
3rd round: Hofer(SUI) – Damsbo (DEN) Having celebrated his 28th birthday yesterday, the experience of Hofer prevailed on the young Dane. Hofer led 55-52 and clinched the match 112-108.
The results of quarter-finals are: Timms (AUS) vs. Hofer (SUI): 115-113 Coghlan (AUS) vs. Dos Santos (BRA): 112-109 Trillus (CAN) vs. Cousins (USA): 112-115 Wallace (AUS) vs. Grimmwood (GBR): 114 T9 : 114 T10
As of the quarter-finals, the archers shoot 4*3 arrows. The quarter-finals were delayed a little because of heavy rains.
Quarter-final: Wallace (AUS) – Grimwood (GBR) Grimwood led 87-85 after three ends but he could not keep it going until the end. The match was tied at 114. However, Grimwood got the edge in the tie-break again, 10-9.
Semi-final: Timms (AUS) – Coghlan (AUS) The two Australians started square at 29 points. Then Timms got the edge, 58-57. He increased to 87-85 and held it at 115-114.
Semi-final: Cousins (USA) – Grimwood (GBR) Again a strong start from both competitors, tied at 29 points. Then Cousins took over with a perfect 30 and led 59-57. They both scored 9-9-10 in the third end (87-85). Cousins dropped a 9 with his 10th arrow but finished with 10-10, winning the match 116-114.
