World Cup Stage 1 – Quotes of the Finals Day
Santo Domingo – 5 April 2008
Here is what the finalists said at the end of the finals of the Meteksan World Cup Stage 1 in Santo Domingo.
Recurve Men
Ilario Di Buo (ITA) It was difficult. Maybe I had an advantage with the windy conditions because I shoot fast. It feels good to win at 43 years old, but it didn’t come by chance. I have the experience of winning some other big tournaments before. It’s clear I am not sure to continue next season, so I should enjoy this one!
Recurve Women
Natalia Valeeva (ITA) I had to adapt to the wind. I had to shot even quicker than usual. I am very happy to start my season like this! A win is always good to take. I hope it predicts a successful season.
Compound Men
Dave Cousins (USA) Obviously it was a fantastic week. I had a lot of fun. I also had some great team-mates, we shot a team world record in the qualifications and we won the team event. Then I was fortunate enough to come across some really tough opponents and win the individual competition. I still don’t know how the rest of my season will look like, because I like to perform on all situations: indoor, outdoor and field. I don’t think I am the master in any discipline, but I like being able to compete in all of them. Anyway, the World Cup participants should keep a close eye on the Aussies. Three individuals in the top eight, that’s impressive!
Compound Women
Jamie Van Natta (USA) The wind was much stronger in the competition field than in the warm-up area. After my 7-8, I just decided to shoot strong shots not to guess where I should aim with the wind. I thought if I shoot with a strong technique, there will be enough arrows going through the wind and reaching the 10 ring. That was enough to win this match since my opponent also dropped a lot of points at the beginning. I now hope for a long and successful season in the World Cup.
Amandine Bouillot (FRA) I released it well, but my shoot-off arrow caught the wind and went up high in the 8. I had a couple of mistakes during the match but overall I shot well. My opponent just hung tough and won at the end. I am still very happy as this 4th place is my best result in the World Cup. It should give me confidence for the rest of the season.
Recurve Men Team
Kim Ha Neul “Sky” (AUS) It’s my first World Cup actually and it was very nice. I enjoyed pretty much everything. The setting of the final field was quite special. I also like the music, the atmosphere. The wind was difficult, sometimes light sometimes heavy. Sky is the translation of my Korean name. I don’t know how my father chose it. I am very happy I moved from Korea to Australia. It’s a very nice country, I like it a lot. It’s also a bit easier to qualify for the national team in Australia than in Korea where the level is so dense.
Compound Men Team
Reo Wilde (USA) I like the venue because it reminded me the 2006 World Cup Final in the Mayapan pyramids! This place in Santo Domingo was great but also windy. We struggled a bit at the beginning of the match but we pulled it together. We finished very strong to clinch the gold.
Compound Women Team
Sofia Goncharova (RUS) When Anna (Kazantseva) is here, she leads the shooting order and I finish it. However, in Anna’s absence, my team-mate decided that I should lead the shooting order and they hoped I would give us a good start. Overall, it worked out well. We managed to keep focus in the last end and this is when we made the difference to clinch this team gold medal. I believe I have shot in every World Cup final field. This one was really nice, but I still prefer the ones where I have won my biggest titles. So the pyramids in Mayapan in 2006 and Madrid, back in 2005, are truly great memories. In terms of the field, the platform on the lake for the Dubai World Cup Final in 2007 was really special too.
Linda Ochoa (MEX) I was shaking during that shoot-off of the bronze match. Twice I was the last archer and I had to shoot a 10 with a few seconds left on the clock to either keep the match alive or to win it. The first time, I was actually afraid the arrow would go too high and I had missed the 10. The second time, my coach was counting down the seconds: 5,4,3,2… so I absolutely had to let go. However, this time I was confident I would reach the 10 ring and we won the match!
