World Cup Stage 3 – Quotes of the Day 1 Antalya – 28 May 2008
The qualifications took place today. The higher the archers ranked, the easier matches they were getting for tomorrow. Of course the World Cup Final and the Olympic Games are on sight.
Recurve Men
Rahul Banerjee (IND) We did a great performance today! Both Korea and we broke the Team World Record but they managed to keep it by four points. It’s a great feeling to perform so high and to be so close of this great Korean team. In the first half I was a bit bothered by the wind but the second half was perfect. It’s too bad we only have one spot for the Olympics. The coaches will decide who is going but I think it will be Mangal Singh Champia. He earned that place at the Continental qualifier last year and he has been shooting terrific this year. He ranked no. 1 today!
Peter Nieuwenhuis (NED) – Team Coach We have earned one Olympic place for the men at the last European Championships in Vittel, but this is not over yet. We need a top 6 or 7 finish in Antalya or in Boé. In any case, I will have to discuss with our National Olympic Committee in between the two stages. If one man does a top 6 or 7, he goes to the Olympics. If two men do it, we will send the best one in our internal ranking.
Glen Croft (GBR) I am 17 year old and this is my first World Cup! I actually felt comfortable out there. The wind pushed a bit the arrows but not too much. Of course, I am disappointed that I missed the cut but my score is what I usually do in practice. This experience set the ball-park for my future training.
Recurve Women
Natalia Valeeva (ITA) The wind was a bit tricky but I wanted to be competitive with the Koreans today. Of course, it’s better to be 1st but a place in the top 5 is good. Compared to last year, I feel much more tonic at this point of the season. I could prepare myself better physically. From a family point of view, my babies are also one year older so I can sleep more at night. I try to keep the right balance in my live. When I am with the family, I feel 100% with the family. When I am alone, I concentrate 100% on archery.
Jennifer Nichols (USA) It’s good to be back in international competitions. Since last September, we have been mainly competing nationally for the team’s trials. It was a long an intense process, but I believe it made all of us shoot better. Now I am happy it’s over. Khatuna Lorig and I will participate in the women competition at the Olympics. I feel much better than a year ago at the World Cup in Antalya. I am very excited about the up-coming events and I hope I will get even sharper with these two World Cup stages (Antalya and Boé). It’s good to be confronted to the international competition. I have been a full-time archer for the last four years, but I hope I can turn it up another notch. Towards Beijing, I will focus on the mental training.
Natalya Erdyniyeva (RUS) Last year I was shooting as well as I could dream. However, today I am just happy I made the cut. Tomorrow with the matches I hope it will be another kind of day. I broke my bowstring in the first half and I never could adapt to the new string in the second half.
We’ll make the final selections for the Olympics after the Russian Championships. That will be around mid July.
Compound Men
Patrizio Hofer (SUI) Some ends, I shot really, really well. However, for the others, I had too much horizontal movement. I am happy I climbed back on the ranking a bit at the end but I will have some tough matches tomorrow.
Compound Women
Jamie Van Natta (USA) A couple of 9s in the last end, very close to the 10 ring, prevented me to beat my World Record… That’s OK; I still hold it (smiling)! There was some wind but you need to watch closely and adapt your shooting to the strength of the wind. As long as I stay on top of the ranking, I am happy!
Amandine Bouillot (FRA) I didn’t do well at all with the wind in the first half. Fortunately, I improved my score by 9 points in the second half and I climbed back on the ranking. I let my shots go a bit more and it paid off.
Sofia Goncharova (RUS) I had a terrible first end with 52 points. I was too nervous and I didn’t manage the wind well. I lost 3-4 points and, at the end of the day, this is the difference between 3rd and 5th place. In any case, I am happy with the way I shot in the second half and hopefully I will continue on this path tomorrow.
