Korean women set 24-arrow world record in quarterfinals
Beijing - 10 August 2008
Korea set a 24-arrow world record today when the women's team of PARK Sung-Hyun, YUN Ok-Hee and JOO Hyun-Jung combined for a score of 231 out of a possible 240 points at the Olympic Green Archery Field. The Korean score of 231 also establishes the Olympic record as the 24-arrow format is being featured for the first time in the Olympic Games.
Overall, there were no major upsets in the women's team elimination rounds with China, Great Britain, France and Korea advancing to the semi-finals.
In the 1/8 elimination round matches, Colombia was defeated by Japan 206-199. Chinese Taipei, the winner of the bronze medal in the Athens 2004 Olympic Games, will not be able to return to the podium in Beijing as they lost to Italy 215-211.
Japan and Italy were then eliminated in the quarterfinals by Great Britain and Korea respectively.
There were several highlights during the quarterfinals. During the match between India and China, the two teams were evenly placed until Dola BANERJEE (IND) shot a five which allowed China to seize the lead and win 211-206.
Following Great Britain's 201-196 win over Japan, Poland, the reigning European women's champions, faced France. The French provided an exciting third end as they shot four tens back to back. The Poles responded with three tens of their own but were eventually defeated 211-218.
The Korean women proved they were the clear favourites for gold after defeating Italy 231-217 in the last quarterfinal match of the day.
Great Britain will face China in the semi-finals, with the two teams having faced each other five times in international competition since 2006. Great Britain won four of those matches.
Korea will face France in the semi-finals, with Korea winning each time they have met since the 2004 Athens Olympic Games. Arrow-by-Arrow Scores and Commentaries Flash Quotes: 1/4 Finals - 1/8 Eliminations
