Athlete of the Week: Deepika KUMARI (IND)
Lausanne – 16 May 2012
The 17-year-old Indian Deepika KUMARI achieved her first World Cup victory earlier this month in Antalya. She is among the favourites to win an Olympic medal later this year.
Deepika KUMARI claimed her first World Cup stage in early May in Antalya. The Indian archer, who will turn 18 in June, had already come close to that feat on several occasions: she placed second at the 2010 World Cup stage 4 in Shanghai at age 16, second again at the World Cup stage 3 in Ogden in 2011, and third at the stage 4 in Shanghai that same year.
Earlier this month on the beach of Antalya, the teenage star upset the top-seeded archer, Olympic team champion and individual silver medallist in Athens 2004 LEE Sung Jin (KOR) in the final, despite losing the first and third sets.
This victory earned Deepika KUMARI a place in the upcoming World Cup Final in Tokyo, and allowed her to move up from the 6th to the 3rd spot of the World Ranking.
The archer from India has already accomplished a lot at the international level despite her young age: she was cadet world champion in 2009 and is the current world junior champion from 2011; at the senior level, she was Commonwealth champion in 2010, and in 2011 was team silver medallist of the Turin World Championships and also the runner-up of the Istanbul World Cup Final.
Deepika KUMARI has been selected to represent India at this year’s Olympic Games, along with Chekrovolu SWURO and Bombayla DEVI. The trio stand a good chance of winning a medal in London if they can maintain their current form, said the coach of the team Purnima MAHATO.
"All the three archers have been doing consistently well in the team’s event while their prospects are bright in the individual event too," MAHATO told Zeenews India.
"The trio have been shooting well but they will have to maintain their form and shoot in the range of 228-229 as a tough team like Korea remains a strong medal contender in the event," added MAHATO, a gold medallist at the Bangkok Asian Grand Prix in 1993.
The trio have brought several laurels for India including a second place at the World Cup stage 1 held in Shanghai in April. The Indian recurve team went down to Korea in the final of the event, which was considered as first trial for the London Olympics.
Expressing satisfaction with the prevailing form of her archers, MAHATO said they will have to further sharpen their shooting skills keeping in mind the prevailing weather conditions in London in July-August. She said the Archery Association of India has shifted its coaching camp from Kolkata to Sikkim for acclimatisation.
Deepika KUMARI, who underwent a 35-day long training camp in South Korea last February, has a good chance to win an individual Olympic medal as well.
Deepika KUMARI has participated in the Arcus film project with fellow international archers IM Dong-Hyun (KOR), Brady ELLISON (USA), Rodger WILLETT Jr. (USA), Rene Philippe KOUASSI (CIV), and former international archer and model Mix HAXHOLM. The Arcus will be a promotional clip for World Archery combining the tradition of our sport and the modern image of our events.
