Drahoninsky, Pultar Musilova complete golden trebles in Ahmedabad

Czechia’s multiple-time Paralympic medallists David Drahoninsky and Sarka Pultar Musilova drew on their experience, composure and precision to claim three gold medals each in Ahmedabad on Tuesday.

On a day when China began their campaign in five team finals, Czechia’s seasoned para archers had one goal – to win every final they entered. Between them, Drahoninsky and Pultar Musilova collected five gold medals after victories in the W1 individual, doubles and mixed team events.

Drahoninsky, the world number 11, first combined with Tomas Vrzal to fight back from a set down and beat Han Guifei-led Chinese team, 5-3, in the W1 men’s doubles final.

He then paired with top-ranked Pultar Musilova to defeat India’s Swati Chaudhary and Adil Mohamed Nazir Ansari, 5-1, for the mixed team gold, adding to the two Paralympic silver medals the Czech pair won together at Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024.

The Tokyo 2020 and Beijing 2008 Paralympic champion kept his composure to claim his third gold of the day, overcoming Chinese teenager Lin Junjie, 7-3, in the W1 men’s individual final.

Needing a six with his final arrow to secure victory, Drahoninsky shot a nine to seal the match in the fifth set.

“I wanted to win the finals and I did it. I celebrated my three golds – I dedicate them to my brother’s son, who is just one month old now. He is a fighter,” said the 44-year-old from Prague.

“All the matches were difficult today, but I did my best.”

It was also an emotional day for Pultar Musilova as she completed her second treble on the circuit, having achieved the first at Nove Mesto in June.

The Paris 2024 silver medallist had to rally from a set down to beat experienced Liu Jing, 6-4, in the W1 women’s individual final.

The fifth set proved decisive as Pultar Musilova opened with an X and closed with another to post 29 points against Liu’s 17, sealing an emotional victory.

The world number one also claimed the W1 women’s doubles title alongside Tereza Brandtlova, with the Czech pair prevailing over China’s Jin Huan and Liu Jing, 5-3.

Hosts India, meanwhile, celebrated two gold medals at Sabarmati Riverfront, a venue that hosted the nation’s first para archery international event.

Paris 2024 Paralympic Champion Harvinder Singh combined with Vijay Sundi to beat Slovakia 6-2 for the recurve men doubles gold medal.

In the compound men doubles, reigning World Archery Para Champion Toman Kumar paired with Shyam Sunder Swami to trounced Abbas Khadim-led Iraq, 152-139.

Kumar will meet Khadim again in the compound men bronze medal match on the final day.

Competition at Ahmedabad 2026 continues on Wednesday with the individual and mixed team finals.
