5 August 2007 - World Cup Stage 4 – Quotes of the Day 6

World Cup Stage 4 – Quotes of the Day 6 Dover – 5 August 2007   Today we talked to the individual recurve and team compound finalists of the Meteksan Archery World Cup Stage 4 in Dover.   Recurve Women Individual   Dola Banerjee (IND) - gold I was very relaxed today and thought only of shooting not winning a medal. My coaches advised m’est e to remain calm, take my time and just to think of building my score. This was made easier by the fact we won the team medal yesterday, it helped me to relax more.   I am very happy with this win and my qualification for the World Cup Final in Dubai, especially since I didn’t do very well at the Leipzig World Championships two weeks ago. I am very happy to have turned things around. Hopefully, my success will raise the profile of the sport in India and will ensure more interest is developed.   Zhang Juan Juan (CHN) – silver Although I won the World Cup title in Mexico last year, I am still not too familiar with the set-up of the finals field and the very special atmosphere. This is an important factor and I wish I could practice or shoot more often in such conditions.   I actually didn’t think much about the World Cup Final qualifications during the whole year, because I think that there are so many excellent shooters in the circuit. Now that I qualified, I am looking forward to go back to the World Cup Final for the second year in a row and I will do my utmost to defend my title.   Malgorzata Cwienczek (POL) - bronze It is very difficult to shoot against someone from your own team in a medal match. I thought I’d left a few arrows too late and the wind was changing all the time making things even more difficult.   I made some technical mistakes in the semi final (against Banerjee) but I noticed what was wrong and I managed to change things to win the bronze. Maybe, I wanted this qualification for the World Cup Final a bit too much as well. I’ll try again next year.   Next time, I hope Poland will be shooting for gold and silver. I am very ambitious, I want to get better and take on the Koreans. I’m now a bit tired after the whole season (the World Cup started in April), but I will do everything to do better next year.   Recurve Men Individual   Baljinima Tsyrempilov (RUS) - gold Last year I had some trouble with my technique and I didn’t train the right way. This year I got some new advices from my coaches and also a new bow. That’s a bit of the reasons why I am shooting much better this year. I also think that at the highest level the mental strength makes the difference. Today, I am glad that I stayed perfectly focused until the last arrow and that I could prove to myself I can win.   I have been around for a long time and what keeps me going is my desire to win… as well as the enjoyment of travelling (Redaction note: Russian Archery Federation President, Vladimir Esheev, started archery to travel… and eventually won an Olympic medal). I am very happy to go to the World Cup Final. There are four recurve men going there and at the beginning of the season I told myself: “why not me?”   (About his niece Natalya Erdynieva):   Yes, Natalya is in fact my niece. I am glad to see some new talents reaching the high level. Can you imagine that this is only her first year at the senior level and that she earned a medal at the recent World Championships? It took me much more time for this feat. She is coached by her parents and I just try to support her emotionally during the competitions.   Alan Wills (GBR) - silver (After beating Simon Terry (GBR) in the semi-final):   It’s amazing! I have worked really hard in the last few years and have had lots of injury problems. Over the past few months I’ve worked with my coaches and physios to get myself fit. I’m now looking forward to having a rest for a month and then start training hard for Dubai.   The reason that Larry and me are shooting so well is that Simon is here. He is so strong and I think he has pushed British archery to another level.   (After winning the silver medal):   It feels great. I’m really happy to be going through to the finals in Dubai and you know the Final is what it’s all about!   Simon Terry (GBR) - bronze I’m very pleased with the way it has gone over the last six months. I’m a little disappointed to lose to Willy for a third time but he is now going to Dubai and I am very happy for him.   As you know, FITA looks for special settings for finals field. Here, we have an old church beside the field, other buildings around and quite a lot of trees. It’s good for the show but it makes it very challenging to read the wind. The wind gets “dirty” with all these elements around the field and it is changing a lot of directions.   We all get on well, we are really close and very strong as a team and we are improving all the time. Larry improved his personal best in at the World Championships in Germany and Al is very good at these head-to–head matches. I have maybe some more experience but the other two guys are pushing me really hard.   Compound Women Team   Carolina Montes (VEN) - gold It’s divine to win a World Cup event! It’s impossible to describe my feelings. We were not only focussed on the competition, but also to enjoy the competition.   Martha Florez (VEN) – gold The important thing was to qualify in first position, because we then knew that we had a good chance to bring a gold medal home. We have been working a lot for this. For some moments, I was like “please give me 10, please give me 10” and I was getting them!   Luzmary Guedez (VEN) - gold We just had a great week with this victory, the perfect organisation and this very nice region (the sea, the Dover castle)! I am also really happy that I have won the mixed team event which means that I have won a new top class bow, arrows and practice target mat.   Emma Parker (GBR) - bronze We prepared really well for the finals today. We practiced our timings today and managed to cut times in practice, we worked hard on the bit in the middle and it paid off.   I was very nervous as this is my only GB trip this year, but it was all great experience, all learning and I’ve got to keep learning.   Stephanie Crang (GBR) - bronze I’m just so happy. I felt a bit nervous but once I got a ten with my first arrow, I was ok. I didn’t really notice the crowd, I was very focused and I blocked everything else out.   I’ve qualified for the World University Games next year and I’m looking forward to that.   Compound Men Team   Joshua Binger (USA) - gold I struggled in the individual competition so I wanted to put in a good team performance. I made some mental and technical adjustments and I shot really well today.   I graduate in Construction Management from Texas A&M next week so I really need to find a job first and then start concentrating on training for the indoor season which starts in January.   Being here in Dover has been quite the thing. Hearing the crowd behind the Great Britain team was great but it also got us pumped up too.   Mark Franklin (GBR) - silver I’m loving it, I’m shooting really well, really solid and I’m just having fun being here.   This is my first competition in the GB shirt and I want to wear this shirt so many more times.   It’s really an experience. My legs have never trembled so much, I was so nervous.   I just pushed it a little on that last shot I was a little tight (on only achieving a 9 with his last arrow – all the others were 10).     Rosemary Leach Dover Organizing Committee   Didier Miéville FITA Communication
