World Cup Stage 3 – Quotes of the Day 2 Antalya – 29 May 2008
Today, the elimination matches were a true race for the places in the World Cup Final.
Recurve Men
Brady Ellison (USA) I was shooting really well today. I've been working hard for a long time and it paid off! I showed my best archery today. I really think all my matches went well, and maybe I had a little bit of luck when I needed it (smiling)! About Saturday’s match - I just want to shoot like today!
Rahul Banerjee (IND) I shot only 26 points in the third end of my semi-final and that was the difference. During the shoot-off I aimed right to counter the wind, but it didn’t blew strong enough at that time. My arrow arrived in the 9 ring, at 3 o’clock. In any case, this semi-final gives me a lot of points for the World Cup ranking. Hopefully I can pick up a 3rd place on Saturday and finish the job in Boé. I guess there will be 5-6 archers fighting for the four places in the World Cup Final.
Recurve Women
Yun Ok Hee (KOR) – scoring 119 points in her semi-final and breaking Song Mi Jin World Record of 118 points, established in 2001. I broke a World Record that was established seven years ago?! That’s amazing! It’s very, very good! During my match, I was not thinking about it. I was just concentrating on my shooting. I have been really consistent this year and I am very, very happy that it turned into a World Record!
Victoria Koval (UKR) I beat two Korean archers today so that’s great! During the first match, I actually wasn’t scoring. I only realized at the end that I had beaten her. It gave me confidence for my semi-final against Kwak Ye Ji and I shot really well. On Saturday’s final I will shoot against another Korean – hopefully I will keep on the same path!
Yuliya Rieznikova (UKR) I am so happy, so happy, for Victoria!! (with tears of joy)
Compound Men
Sergio Pagni (ITA) I have worked a lot on my technique since last season. Now I have more back-tension, I am controlling my shots much better, therefore I am losing much less points because of the wind. I actually like the wind now.
I have been shooting well the whole year. I won in Porec in the Marina and now, in Antalya, the final will be on the beach. That should be pretty similar and I am looking forward to it. In any case, I think I have earned enough points now to qualify for the World Cup Final later this year. Since Porec, I have kept the same routine. I shoot very relaxed. I ranked 5th at the European Championships and I was beaten by Dejan Sitar. I hope I will get my revenge against him in Saturday’s final.
Peter Elzinga (NED) I was second in Antalya in 2006, and this time I will play for the bronze final. It’s a pretty good place for me! I must congratulate the organizers for a very smooth organization. It makes us, the archers, feel good and we can concentrate only on the shooting. Of course, that little wind in Antalya is enough to push your arrows out of the 10 ring. You must pay attention to the wind and see what effect it has. Then you have to counter-aim a little. In Compound, you absolutely need 10s to win, 9s are not enough.
In recent competitions, I became easily nervous but this time I could stay relaxed all the way through. Hopefully I can keep the same composure for the bronze match against Patrizio Hofer. This match is very important for both us. Maybe it will be decisive for a qualification to the World Cup Final later this year.
Compound Women
Jamie Van Natta (USA) Hat off to the Korean girl that shot 119 this morning. I would have loved to do so this afternoon but I couldn’t do it today (smiling). In any case, shooting constantly around 115 was giving me a good chance to go far in my category this afternoon. I am happy I will play on another final field on Saturday and I am looking forward to this beach!
This also puts me in good standing in the World Cup ranking and my ultimate goal this season is the World Cup Final.
Mario Ruele – Italian Compound Coach (About Sergio Pagni and Eugenia Salvi shooting for gold on Saturday)
Two athletes in the gold finals, and they deserve it! They are both in great shape. We were unlucky in the European Championships in Vittel two weeks ago. Sergio had a car accident that completely stopped him for a week. He could not be back at his best on time for Vittel. Eugenia had an unlucky match and she was out. Here they both showed their level. Let’s not forget that Eugenia is the current World Champion both indoor and outdoor. I hope she will climb back in the World Cup ranking after this event.
